San Antonio to Build Largest Municipal Solar Project in Texas

The City of San Antonio will receive a $30 million federal grant to build the largest municipal on-site solar project in Texas that will significantly reduce the city’s reliance on fossil fuels.

The grant stems from the Inflation Reduction Act and will go toward installing solar panels across 42 city facilities, spanning rooftops, parking lots, and parking spaces.

According to Fox San Antonio, the solar panels are expected to generate over 18 million kWh annually, offsetting approximately 13% of the city’s electricity usage for municipal buildings. They will also save the city between $7 million and $11 million over the next 25 years.

The project is an important step toward achieving San Antonio’s net-zero energy consumption goal for all municipal buildings by 2040.

The project developer, Big Sun Solar, has partnered with the St. Phillips College Solar Apprenticeship Program to create a training pipeline for future solar energy professionals, equipping students with the skills they need to succeed in the renewable energy industry.
