The New Jersey Turnpike Authority (NJTA) announced it will part ways with Tesla and remove 64 Superchargers from the super highway connecting the northern and southern parts of the state.
The authority will switch to third-party provider Applegreen Electric for its EV charging.
According to NJ.com, service areas on the turnpike will begin transitioning fully to Universal Open Access EV chargers beginning June 6. The new chargers are compatible with all EV makes and models.
Despite offering above-market commercial terms, including building Superchargers at all New Jersey service plazas and providing extensive equipment upgrades, the NJTA did not renew its contract. Tesla called the decision a setback for EV users on the highway.
Tesla released a statement on X, saying in part, “We are still willing to invest in New Jersey Turnpike sites if the New Jersey Turnpike or Murphy want to reverse this decision. Otherwise, we will continue to build out the best possible infrastructure off the Turnpike to serve Tesla owners and the electric vehicle drivers of New Jersey.”
The new universal chargers will be available at the Vince Lombardi, Woodrow Wilson, Richard Stockton, James Fenimore Cooper, Joyce Kilmer, and Walt Whitman Service Areas beginning June 6. New chargers at the Molly Pitcher, Clara Barton, and John Fenwick Service Areas will be installed later this year.
