The Pennsylvania Turnpike (PA Turnpike) and Applegreen Electric have added new EV charging stations at the North Somerset and South Somerset Service Plazas as part of the state’s 30+ year commitment to sustainability.
The charging station buildouts support the launch of a systemwide EV charging program, which will provide drivers with accessible, on-route EV charging options.
Both sites include two high-speed 400 kW chargers that have the ability to charge two vehicles at once, with a total of four charging ports per location. They provide rapid charging in 30 minutes or less, and support both the North American Charging Standard (NACS) and Combined Charging System (CCS).
There is room for expansion to accommodate additional chargers if utilization increases.
The North and South Somerset chargers, along with an additional charger at the Hickory Run Service Plaza, are scheduled to open this fall. They were funded by grants from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection’s Driving PA Forward program.
The EV charging program is part of the PA Turnpike’s efforts aimed at becoming the first sustainable superhighway in the U.S. by 2040.
“The expansion of EV chargers along the PA Turnpike reflects our growth and commitment to meeting the evolving needs of our customers,” said PA Turnpike CEO Mark Compton, in a statement. “Beyond serving our customers, it also demonstrates our commitment to being a better neighbor across the Commonwealth. Supporting electric vehicle adoption is a key part of our broader goal to reduce our carbon footprint, build a sustainable and restorative roadway and support renewable energy and infrastructure development in Pennsylvania.”
