ComEd Invests Over $100 Million to Accelerate EV Adoption and Charging Infrastructure

Northern Illinois utility ComEd has spent over $100 million in EV and EV charging rebates since it launched the Beneficial Electrification (BE) Plan in 2024.

In addition to funding from the Illinois EPA and other Federal grants, the investment has been a core driver of EV adoption in the state, rapidly outpacing the rest of the country.

Since its launch, the program has aided in the deployment of more than 7,200 EV charging ports and over 2,200 EVs registered to business and public sector commercial customers.

ComEd has since announced plans to dedicate an additional $168 million to EV and charging infrastructure investments between 2026 and 2028 to meet Illinois’ clean transportation goals. The funds will go toward helping residential and non-residential customers make the switch to EVs.

According to Electrek, over 80% of the rebates from its 6,400-plus projects will go to low-income businesses and public sector organizations serving low-income and Equity Investment Eligible Communities (EIECs).

The rebates support the mission of Illinois’ 2021 Climate and Equitable Jobs Act (CEJA), which addresses climate change and promotes beneficial electrification across the state.

“Reducing emissions from vehicles is one of the most effective and important things we can do to improve air quality and public health,” said Rob Anderson, President and CEO of Respiratory Health Association. “As we have seen the ending of federal funding support for this effort, ComEd’s continued commitment of transportation electrification rebates is leading the way for our shared goal of eliminating pollution and creating cleaner air for all of our communities across northern Illinois.”
