CPS Energy and independent power producer (IPP) Eolian’s Padua 1 battery energy storage system (BESS) has commenced operations in Bexar County, Texas.
The 50 MW/100 MWh system, owned and operated by Eolian, has been delivered in response to a request for proposals seeking 500 MW of battery storage, launched by CPS in 2020.
According to Energy Storage News, CPS and Eolian entered into a storage capacity agreement in 2023, with the project supporting the utility’s Vision 2027 strategy, which seeks to secure reliable, resilient, and cleaner energy solutions.
Padua 1 connects to CPS Energy’s grid and charges when electricity supply is high, discharging stored power during peak-cost and high-demand periods.
“Padua 1 is a major step forward for our utility and our community,” said Rudy D. Garza, President and CEO of CPS Energy, in a statement. “It’s the first energy storage project as part of our diverse generation plan to come online, and it sets the tone for what’s ahead. Battery storage strengthens our ability to continue to serve our customers reliably now and in the future.”
Padua 2, also located in Bexar County, is expected to come online in Spring 2026. Under a community benefits agreement, the project will add at least $175,000 annually for five years to CPS Energy-sponsored initiatives and scholarships in the Greater San Antonio area.
“The overall Padua Grid battery energy storage complex, which will total 400 MW and nearly 2 GWh when completed in early 2026, will be the largest battery energy storage deployment in Texas when completed,” added Aaron Zubaty, CEO of Eolian.
