Utility-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) developer and operator GridStor has acquired a 100 MW/400 MWh battery storage project from Strata Clean Energy.Â
The White Tank battery project, located in Maricopa County, Arizona, will be operated through a 20-year tolling agreement with the stateâs largest utility, Arizona Public Service (APS). Â
Under the agreement, the project will allow APS to charge and discharge electricity as needed to ensure its customers have power when they need it most. Itâll also be used to sustain the regionâs new industrial facilities.Â
The close of White Tank marks GridStorâs second acquisition in Arizona and its fourth overall within the last twelve months. The company manages a project pipeline of over 5 GW of battery storage projects that are either in later-stage development or under construction across the western and central United States. Â
GridStorâs acquisition and plan to build additional standalone battery storage in Arizona comes as the state experiences tremendous demand growth, with APS and other utilities setting new all-time records for peak power demand in August.Â
âThrough this acquisition, GridStor is proud to extend our commitment to supporting Arizona utilities to meet the fast-growing power needs of their residents and businesses,â said Chris Taylor, CEO of GridStor, in a statement. âBattery storage remains a highly scalable, cost-effective and near-term solution to powering rapidly growing energy capacity needs across the Southwest. We look forward to serving as a trusted partner to APS to meet the needs of Arizonaâs residents and businesses.â Â
White Tank is expected to be placed into service in the first half of 2027.Â
