Ithaca College has completed a project that significantly expands EV charging infrastructure across its South Hill campus; the chargers are open to students, faculty, staff, campus visitors, and surrounding community members.
Its multi-year “Recharge at IC” initiative increases public charging capacity ninefold by adding 30 new charging stations across campus, including Level 2 stations and dual-port DC fast chargers—the first publicly available DC fast chargers on a college campus in New York State.
The stations are available to use for up to four hours per session. Charging will be offered at below-residential rates, with the DC fast chargers priced at $0.30/kWh and Level 2 chargers at $0.15/kWh.
The Office of Facilities commissioned an assessment of electrification opportunities for the college’s fleet of over 150 vehicles in 2022, with funding support from Avangrid, NYSEG’s parent company. The assessment identified campus locations where expanded public charging would support the college’s drivers as well as EV users in the county. At the time, Ithaca College only had two dual chargers on campus, with a maximum capacity for four vehicles.
After a competitive selection process, the college chose Lynkwell to design and install the charging systems.
“With this project, we saw an opportunity to not only accelerate the electrification of our own campus fleet but also to meet a clear community need,” said Scott Doyle, director of energy management and sustainability at Ithaca College, in a statement. “Access to dependable charging is the number one factor that determines whether people feel confident making the switch to an electric vehicle. This new infrastructure helps remove that barrier for our campus and for the region.”
Revenue from charging will support long-term maintenance and future EV infrastructure projects at the college.
