Last week, community leaders in Howard County, Maryland celebrated a ribbon cutting in recognition of a new 3.2 megawatt (MWdc) community solar farm, the Lime Kiln project.
The project was developed by leading Maryland-based renewable energy developer, Chaberton Energy, which is owned and operated by Pivot Energy, a national clean energy provider and independent power producer (IPP).
Local Howard County leaders, community members, and development and construction partners attended the ribbon cutting. Chaberton Energy, through Chaberton Cares, also presented the Bright Minds Foundation, Howard County Public Schools’ education foundation, with a $10,000 check to fund a STEM scholarship for graduating seniors over the next five years.
The Lime Kiln project is part of the Maryland Community Solar program and is already fully subscribed. Subscribers will save an average of 10% off their electricity bills annually. The project also incorporates agrivoltaics, including sheep grazing, native pollinator planting, and other efforts to ensure the long-term productivity of the land.
Chaberton has over 200 MWdc of community solar projects in the state that are in operation, construction, or development; Pivot and Chaberton have partnered on the buildout of solar projects totaling approximately 40 MWac.
“Renewable energy projects like this one are critical to the continued success of Howard County,” said Howard County Executive Calvin Ball, during the ceremony. “Solar is bringing locally generated energy to our community, while helping meet Maryland’s ambitious goal of reaching 100% renewable energy by 2035.”
