The Washington State Department of Commerce, Clean and Prosperous Institute, Electric Era, and Skycharger joined local partners to celebrate the grand opening of the state’s first fast-charging EV station funded by the Washington Electric Vehicle Charging Program (WAEVCP).
The program is Washington’s largest Climate Commitment Act (CCA) investment in EV infrastructure. The state invested $511,000; it cost $908,000 in total, with private funding contributing 44%.
The publicly funded, nonprofit-led project is a prime example of how local partnerships and technology providers can develop clean transportation solutions quickly and affordably.
The station is located just west of Arlington, Washington and will be available to drivers traveling between Interstate 5 and the North Cascades.
It contains eight ports and is one of 136 sites funded by WAEVCP’s $101 million investment.
“This charging station is a result of collaboration between Washington state, private industry and local leaders to solve real-world challenges,” said Commerce Director Joe Nguyễn, in a statement. “It’s about cleaner air, stronger communities, and creating a more reliable EV experience for Washington drivers.”
Unlike traditional EV chargers, the station utilizes onsite battery storage to draw power from the grid, meaning fewer utility upgrades, lower peak demand, and reduced fuel costs for drivers by avoiding high demand charges typically associated with fast charging.
