Georgia Power Breaks Ground on 260-MW BESS Adjacent to Wadley Solar Facility

Georgia Power announced it has begun construction on a new 260-megawatt (MW) battery energy storage system (BESS) in Jefferson County, Georgia.

Approved by the Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC), the project is located next to the existing third-party owned Wadley solar facility and near existing transmission infrastructure.

The BESS is designed to quickly dispatch stored energy over a four-hour period. Once complete, it will boost grid reliability and the surrounding area’s growing renewable energy resources.

Projects like the Wadley BESS are helping address the state’s growing power demands identified in the 2025 Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) in a cost-effective and strategic way.

“At Georgia Power, our collaboration with the Georgia PSC and other stakeholders is key to making necessary investments for a reliable and resilient power grid,” said Kerry Bridges, region executive for Georgia Power, in a statement.

Georgia Power leaders, members of the Jefferson County Board of Commissioners, and the Wadley City Council joined other community partners to break ground on the project, signaling the strong partnerships that are helping bring the project to life.

Project developers anticipate lasting economic impact and benefits to Jefferson County.

Burns & McDonnell is providing construction services; the project is expected to reach completion in 2027.
