City of Charlottesville Expands EV Charging Infrastructure with New Level 2 Stations

The City of Charlottesville, Virginia has opened four new EV charging stations with help from the city’s EV Charging Infrastructure Grant.

The 19.2-kW level 2 chargers were installed by InBio to provide a convenient and accessible charging option for residents and visitors in the downtown area.

Charlottesville has one of the highest rates of EV adoption in the state, with interest currently surging as gas prices continue to skyrocket. Its EV Charging Infrastructure Grant was updated in 2023 to increase the buildout of public chargers.

“Many of our community members are looking for more affordable transportation options,” said Climate Program Specialist Tray Biasiolli, in a statement. “EVs are a great option for Charlottesville residents, as they’re cheaper to fuel and maintain than gas vehicles. We hope the addition of these new chargers encourages residents to consider an EV for their next vehicle purchase.”

Additional funds are available for local businesses to install EV charging infrastructure, with up to $4,000 per level 2 station and $10,000 per DC fast charging station.

Kristina Reid Black, InBio’s Sustainability Specialist, added, “InBio has been a member of the Green Business Alliance for over 10 years, which has led to the development of an award-winning green benefits program for employees and a significant carbon emission reduction at their Harris Street facility. The installation of EV chargers was on the wish list for a while and with the support of the City’s mini-grant program, it is now a reality.”
