Cummins Lands Largest BESS Deployment to Date for U.S. AI Data Center Project

Cummins Inc. has announced that its Power Generation business has been selected to supply battery energy storage systems (BESS) for a large U.S. data center project, marking the company’s largest BESS deployment to date.

The project will use Cummins’ utility-scale BESS solution to manage AI-driven load fluctuations, reduce demand spikes, and maintain a stable load profile at the utility interconnection point.

The system is built around a 5 megawatt-hour (MWh) nominal capacity block using lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery chemistry with liquid cooling thermal management.

Its flexible direct current (DC) block architecture is compatible with multiple power conversion and energy management systems and is designed for integration with existing diesel and natural gas generator infrastructure. The solution can be deployed as a bridge-to-grid resource, integrated with backup power systems, or incorporated into a broader microgrid architecture.

“As demand for data center capacity continues to grow, Cummins is well positioned to support customers with a broad portfolio of power solutions, from diesel standby and natural gas prime power to BESS and integrated microgrid solutions,” said Jenny Bush, president of Cummins’ Power Systems business, in a statement.

Cummins launched its BESS product line in May 2025 as part of its broader commitment to providing reliable and sustainable power solutions for the North American data center market.

Bush continued, “This project reinforces our commitment to helping customers build reliable, resilient and increasingly sustainable power infrastructure.”
