DCAS and NYC Public Schools Install First Staten Island Solar Canopy EV Charging Station

The New York City Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS) and New York City Public Schools (NYCPS) have completed the city’s first solar canopy electric vehicle charging installation on Staten Island, located at The Michael J. Petrides School in Ocean Terrace.

The project includes a solar canopy and six Level 2 charging ports supporting both city fleet and school operations.

The installation is the first completed project under Local Law 63 (2024), which directs DCAS to develop a pilot program for solar canopies in city-controlled parking lots across all five boroughs. It is also the city’s second operational solar charging canopy, building on a 2022 installation supporting Department of Correction operations on Rikers Island.

The canopy is designed to charge electric fleet vehicles and school buses around the clock, with grid power serving as a backup at night or during periods of high demand. In the event of a power outage, the solar panels can continue generating electricity during daylight hours.

The project received more than $250,000 in total investment from DCAS.

“By expanding electric vehicle charging stations, we are taking the next step to building a greener and more sustainable city,” said Deputy Mayor for Operations Julia Kerson, in a statement. “This project will make green infrastructure more accessible, cut the city’s carbon emissions and lower energy costs for New Yorkers in every borough.”

It brings New York City’s municipal charging network to more than 2,600 charging ports, the largest municipal charging network in the state. DCAS currently manages 5,970 electric vehicles across city operations.
