Leading EV charging infrastructure developer Skycharger has been awarded a lease to develop a fast-charging hub at San Francisco International Airport (SFO).
The lease was approved by the San Francisco Board of Supervisors on June 10; construction will take place with the support of EPC firm Burns & McDonnell.
Skycharger’s EV Hub will serve electric rideshare vehicles like Uber and Lyft, in addition to EV-driving airport customers and the general public. It will also include a convenience store.
The Hub, which will host 24 charging ports, is expected to minimize charging times with high-capacity chargers that provide rapid, “industry-leading” rates of charge. It will also support larger EVs with large battery packs that require high power to keep dwell times on par with smaller batteries.
The project supports SFO’s sustainability initiatives and will help advance its goal of zero net carbon operations. It will also play an important role in meeting the anticipated surge in charging demand due to California’s Clean Miles Standard, which requires 90% of Uber and Lyft miles to be traveled by EVs by 2030.
Skycharger estimates that the SFO EV Hub will avoid more than 200,000 tons of CO2 in its first ten years of operation.
“We are grateful to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors and the SFO Airport Commission for selecting Skycharger to build a state-of-the-art EV charging experience at the Airport. Skycharger’s EV Hub will be a next-generation facility that reflects the steadfast, bold leadership of SFO, San Francisco, and California in clean transportation technologies,” said Andy Karetsky, CEO of Skycharger, in a statement.
