EVgo’s Next-Gen Charger Targets 10-Minute Charging

EVgo has shared a preview of its next-generation charging system, which is designed to deliver up to 750 kilowatts (kW) of power.

Design, development, and testing are taking place at the company’s Innovation Lab in El Segundo, California, with co-development support from longtime partner Delta Electronics.

EVgo is one of the few American charging networks that designs its own chargers.

The system is built around driver experience, drawing on data from 1.8 million customer accounts and more than 10 million charging sessions per year. Planned features include more maneuverable cables, a touchless payment interface, and upgraded hardware and firmware aimed at improving reliability.

Every station will use NACS connectors, part of EVgo’s strategy to widen its customer base by welcoming more NACS drivers. The company expects the system to charge the fastest-charging vehicles on the U.S. market in about 10 minutes.

“EVgo has served EV drivers for over 15 years, and our investment in our 750kW next-generation architecture future-proofs our network for current and future vehicles,” said Badar Khan, CEO of EVgo, in a statement.

He continued, “Charge rates seen on the EVgo network are increasing, up nearly 20% in the last two years. We expect that to continue, and our new architecture will help meet growing demand for high-power charging while delivering an industry-leading customer experience for EV drivers.”

EVgo expects to unveil the final charger design in 2027 as it begins deploying the new architecture.
