Georgia Power has celebrated the completion of its Moody battery energy storage system (BESS) in Lowndes County, Georgia, adding 49.5 megawatts (MW) of flexible energy storage to the state’s power grid.
The facility, located just outside of Valdosta, was completed ahead of schedule and is co-located with the nearby Moody solar facility.
The battery system is capable of storing energy captured during periods of lower electricity demand and discharging it over a four-hour period when demand is higher.
The Moody BESS is one of four battery storage projects approved across the state, with the remaining three — located in Bibb, Cherokee, and Floyd counties — nearing completion for a combined total of 715 MW.
“The successful completion of the Moody Battery Energy Storage System, ahead of schedule, is great news for our customers and for reliable energy in our state,” said Rick Anderson, senior vice president and senior production officer for Georgia Power, in a statement.
Georgia Power has also received approval from the Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC) for nine additional BESS facilities across eight sites statewide, adding more than 3,000 MW of planned storage.
New locations include Plants Bowen, Hammond, McIntosh, Wansley, and Yates, as well as standalone sites in Hall and McDuffie counties. Two additional solar and BESS projects totaling 350 MW of combined capacity have also been approved in Laurens and Dougherty counties.
