New York’s SUNY System Partners with NYPA to Fast-Track Campus Clean Energy Development

The State University of New York (SUNY) and the New York Power Authority (NYPA) have announced a new partnership to accelerate solar and energy storage development across SUNY’s state-operated campuses, leveraging the system’s statewide scale to identify and fast-track the strongest clean energy opportunities.

SUNY represents approximately 40% of all New York State-owned buildings, spanning 111 million square feet across nearly 54,000 acres. NYPA will establish a dedicated team to provide technical, financial, procurement, and project development support across the SUNY portfolio.

Every state-operated campus will participate in a comprehensive assessment of potential solar and storage opportunities, with the first group of five to seven campuses expected to move into detailed project development following the initial evaluation.

“SUNY is proud to lead the way in helping build a more resilient and sustainable New York State and showcase how investments in clean energy can yield long-term savings,” said SUNY Chancellor John B. King Jr., in a statement. “We are pleased to partner with the New York Power Authority on this new effort, and we thank Governor Hochul for her continuous support of SUNY’s clean energy initiatives.”

The initiative will focus initially on solar and battery energy storage, with the potential to expand into additional clean energy technologies over time.

It builds on more than three decades of collaboration between SUNY and NYPA, which has already delivered 132 energy projects generating more than $31.6 million in annual utility savings across the system.
