Sunrun, Voltus Expand Distributed Energy Capacity for AI Data Centers Across PJM and MISO

Sunrun, America’s largest provider of residential battery storage and solar, has announced an agreement with Voltus, a distributed energy resource platform, to supply energy capacity from thousands of residential storage-plus-solar systems across the PJM and MISO grid regions to support Voltus’s Bring Your Own Capacity (BYOC) programs for AI hyperscalers.

Under the agreement, Voltus will orchestrate flexible distributed resources such as home batteries to reduce energy demand when the grid needs it, channeling investment from hyperscalers directly into local communities while supporting grid reliability.

Homeowners participating in the program are compensated for making their battery systems available.

“Meeting growing energy demand requires us to maximize every single electron available across the country,” said Sunrun CEO Mary Powell, in a statement. “In collaboration with Voltus, we are providing critical capacity from home batteries supported by funding from hyperscalers. This is just the beginning of what distributed energy assets can achieve.”

The partnership builds on Voltus’s previously announced BYOC program, which enables large electricity users like data centers to bring firm, flexible capacity to facilitate grid interconnection.

It also expands on the separate initiative announced earlier this year by Sunrun, Renew Home, and Tesla to unlock more than 16.8 gigawatts (GW) of flexible capacity from home batteries, solar systems, smart thermostats, and electric vehicles.

Dana Guernsey, CEO of Voltus, added, “This partnership brings together Sunrun’s residential scale with Voltus’s market-integrated flexibility platform so distributed capacity can support reliability, affordability, and growth as electricity demand increases.”
