Viridi, a distributed energy storage provider, and Good Carbon Co. have deployed a 3.75 megawatt-hour (MWh) lithium-ion battery energy storage system at Peace Bridge Place, a 105-unit affordable housing apartment building in Buffalo, New York.
The companies describe it as one of the largest indoor lithium-ion battery systems in an occupied residential building in the U.S.
The system is Viridi’s RPSLinkIN indoor battery energy storage system (BESS) and is part of a broader clean energy strategy for the building that includes geothermal heating and cooling, domestic hot water, and building envelope upgrades. It is designed to supply extended backup power to the fully electrified building during outages and to reduce demand on the local grid at peak times.
The project is a National Grid pilot focused on integrating flexible, grid-responsive technologies into its distribution network. The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) is supporting Good Carbon Co. through its Future Grid Challenge.
Viridi’s technology will work with EnergyHub’s Edge distributed energy resource management system (DERMS), allowing the property to respond to National Grid signals during peak demand.
“Peace Bridge Place demonstrates how forward-thinking energy storage solutions can ensure New York’s multifamily buildings are meeting the energy needs of its residents while creating a more reliable and resilient electric grid,” said Doreen M. Harris, President and CEO, NYSERDA, in a statement. “Projects like this embody NYSERDA’s mission to spur innovation that drives New York toward a clean energy future.”
