Google Expands Texas Clean Energy Portfolio with 500 MW Solar Deal

Google has signed a 15-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with renewable energy developer Linea Energy for 500 megawatts (MW) of solar energy from a new project in Texas, aimed at supporting the company’s data center operations in the state.

According to ESGtoday, the agreement will source power from Linea’s Duffy Solar Project, covering 3,526 acres in Matagorda, Texas.

The project will begin construction in Q3 2026 and is co-located with Linea’s 235 MWac Duffy battery energy storage system, which is currently under construction. It will support Google’s operations within the ERCOT market, which covers 90% of Texas’s electrical grid and serves approximately 26 million customers.

The deal is the latest in a series of large-scale clean energy purchases by Google, which has signed more than 170 agreements to purchase over 23 gigawatts (GW) of clean energy generation since 2010.

Recent transactions include a 1 GW solar PPA with TotalEnergies in Texas and a 1.2 GW deal with Clearway to power data centers in Missouri, Texas, and West Virginia.

“We are pleased to sign this agreement to supply clean energy in Texas to Google, one of the world’s largest buyers of clean power,” said Cassidy DeLine, Chief Executive Officer of Linea Energy. “This transaction highlights Linea’s credibility amongst the largest hyperscalers and the ability to support affordability and grid reliability.”

The announcement advances Google’s 2030 goals to reach net-zero emissions across its operations and run its entire business on carbon-free energy around the clock in every region where it operates.
