New York City will install the largest municipal curbside EV charging project in the U.S. with help from a $15 million federal grant from the Department of Transportationโs Charging and Fueling Infrastructure Grant Program.ย
According to Cities Today, the funding will also support the construction of 32 solar-powered charging ports at eight NYC Department of Parks and Recreation locations.ย
The city plans to install 600 Level 2 chargers on streets in all five boroughs: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx, and Staten Island. More than half will be designated for disadvantaged and low-income neighborhoods.ย
Developed in partnership with Con Edison, the project builds on the cityโs EV charging pilot, PlugNYC, which has led to the installation of 100 Level 2 charging ports since its inception in June 2021.ย
โCombined with efforts to promote mass transit and cycling, this grant will help us take a big step toward decarbonizing the transportation sector in New York City,โ said New York City Department of Transportation Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez.ย
