EDP Renewables North America (EDPR NA) and Salt River Project (SRP) recently celebrated the completion of Flatland Energy Storage, a 200-megawatt (MW)/800 megawatt-hour (MWh) battery energy storage system (BESS) in Arizona.
The project is the largest BESS within the EDP Group and has the capacity to power the equivalent of approximately 44,500 Arizona homes, helping ensure reliable electricity during periods of peak demand.
The project represents approximately $18.5ā19 million in local and regional economic impact over its lifetime, including revenue to local government to support public services and infrastructure.
āFlatland Energy Storage is part of SRPās all-of-the-above approach to providing reliable, affordable, and sustainable power to our customers,ā said Bobby Olsen, SRP Associate General Manager and Chief Power System Executive, in a statement. āSRP will continue to invest in battery energy storage resources as part of its growing resource portfolio.ā
EDPR NA operates approximately 600 MW of gross capacity across solar and storage in Arizona, powering the equivalent of more than 113,000 homes.
EDP has a growing global storage portfolio of more than 460 MW in operation and under construction across the United States, Europe, South America, and the Asia-Pacific.
Miguel Stilwell dāAndrade, CEO of EDP Group, added, āPower systems are becoming more complex, and energy demand continues to rise, making investment in more resilient systems increasingly important. Large-scale energy storage projects like this one, the largest within the EDP Group to date, are critical to strengthening grid stability and resilience and supporting more reliable system performance.ā
