CS PowerTech Inc., a subsidiary of Canadian Solar, has launched solar cell manufacturing operations at River Ridge Commerce Center in Jeffersonville, Indiana, marking the opening of the first U.S. facility purpose-built to produce heterojunction bifacial N-type solar cells.
According to The Cool Down, the plant began operations on July 24.
At full production, the Jeffersonville facility is expected to produce 6 gigawatt-peak (GWp) of solar cells annually, with the cells to be assembled into solar panels at a Texas plant. The project represents nearly $1 billion in local investment and is expected to create 1,200 jobs in the Jeffersonville area. Phase II expansion is planned for late 2026.
Heterojunction bifacial N-type solar cells are among the most efficient solar cell technologies available, capable of capturing light from both sides of the panel and commonly used in large-scale utility solar farms. By producing these cells domestically, CS PowerTech aims to strengthen the U.S. solar manufacturing supply chain and reduce dependence on imported components.
“CS PowerTech’s investment strengthens Indiana’s position in advanced manufacturing, creates good-paying jobs for Hoosiers in the area, and reinforces our role in building the technologies that will continue to power America’s future,” said Indiana Gov. Mike Braun.
The facility is located on a 6,000-acre site that formerly housed the Indiana Army Ammunition Plant, marking a significant transformation for the River Ridge Commerce Center.
The opening builds on Canadian Solar’s broader regional presence, which includes previously announced plans for a $712 million battery facility in Shelbyville, Indiana.
