STPUD Brings Tahoe Basin’s Largest Solar System Online at Wastewater Treatment Facility

The South Tahoe Public Utility District (STPUD) has completed the installation of a new solar system for its wastewater treatment plant, marking an important step forward in its commitment to sustainability, cost efficiency, and reliable service for the community.

The solar array — the largest in the Tahoe Basin and designed specifically for mountain conditions — will reduce STPUD’s electricity costs by locking in predictable energy rates for decades to come.

The site incorporates bi-facial solar panels that are elevated and angled to naturally shed snow, while also capturing sunlight reflected off the ground, maximizing performance year-round. It is expected to generate approximately 2,000 megawatt hours (MWh) each year, offsetting about one-third of the treatment plant’s annual energy use.

“This project reflects our responsibility to both our ratepayers and the environment,” said Shane Romsos, STPUD Board President, in a statement. “By investing in proven solar technology, we are reducing costs, increasing energy independence, and supporting a cleaner future for our region.”

STPUD entered into a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for the project, ensuring no costs will be passed on to ratepayers. The district will pay only for the energy produced, at approximately half the current utility rate.

The project was made possible through regional collaboration as well as partnerships with the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, the City of South Lake Tahoe, El Dorado County, and Liberty Utilities.

STPUD will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony with community members, partners, and stakeholders to celebrate the project’s completion on Wednesday, April 29.
