Suniva announced that it has entered into agreements to bring a state-of-the-art 4.5-gigawatt (GW) solar cell manufacturing facility to Laurens, South Carolina.
In addition to the company’s existing facility at its Atlanta headquarters, the new site, which is expected to open in Q2 2027, will bring the company’s total domestic solar cell manufacturing capacity to over 5.5 GW annually—the largest of any U.S. merchant solar cell manufacturer.
“Suniva has long championed U.S. leadership in solar manufacturing. Solar energy is the fastest and most economical way to grow our nation’s energy supply,” said Tony Etnyre, CEO of Suniva, in a statement. “Our expansion means that domestically produced renewable energy will do more than ever to secure America’s energy future. We are proud to partner with the state of South Carolina on this vital initiative.”
The 620,000 square-foot Laurens facility will create over 550 high-quality jobs in one of the fastest-growing sectors in the country. It also represents over $350 million in advanced manufacturing and clean energy investment in South Carolina.
Suniva is the sole merchant solar cell manufacturer in the U.S. that is both American owned and operated, giving it a unique advantage in that it isn’t exposed to risks associated with a foreign supply chain or geopolitical disruptions.
Matt Card, President and COO of Suniva, added, “At this moment in history, the question of where our energy comes from – and who controls the supply chain that delivers it – is among the most consequential questions America faces. Suniva’s answer is straightforward: we build it here.”
