Madison Energy Infrastructure Targets 1 GW of Distributed Energy by 2028

Madison Energy Infrastructure has announced the launch of its Community Infrastructure initiative, committing to develop an additional 1 gigawatt (GW) of distributed energy capacity by 2028.

The company plans to mobilize up to $2 billion in capital to bring solar and storage infrastructure to communities facing rising electricity demand driven by AI and data center growth.

The initiative targets distributed solar and energy storage as a complement to large-scale generation, bringing new capacity online faster and closer to where electricity is consumed to help residents, businesses, and utilities manage rising costs and grid constraints.

Madison currently operates more than 600 projects across 30 states, with its operating portfolio expected to surpass 1 GW later this fall. The Community Infrastructure initiative would effectively double the company’s energy infrastructure footprint in two years.

“Community Infrastructure is about helping AI labs and hyperscalers show up for communities, not just in them. We’ve spent years cultivating the right relationships, development capabilities, and national ecosystem needed to turn that idea into local energy infrastructure at scale,” said Richard Walsh, Chief Executive Officer of Madison Energy Infrastructure, in a statement.

Projects already underway include 50 megawatts (MW) of standalone energy storage with CORE Electric Cooperative in Colorado, a 13 MW solar and 8.75 MW storage project at the Jerry Tyler Memorial Airport in Niles, Michigan, a 16 MW solar project under construction at Denver International Airport, and a 27 MW offsite solar project nearing completion in Pennsylvania serving a national industrial client.
