Arizona’s Box Canyon Solar Project Now Operational

Next-generation power and digital infrastructure company BrightNight has partnered with Cordelio Power and the Southwest Public Power Agency (SPPA) Inc. to begin commercial operations of the 300-megawatt utility-scale Box Canyon Solar Project.

Located in Pinal County, Arizona, the project represents the largest clean energy procurement in SPPA’s history.

It is also the first project in BrightNight and Cordelio Power’s 2.5 GW Arizona portfolio to commence operations.

The Box Canyon Solar Project generated $47 million in economic impact for the county during the construction period and created over 300 jobs. Over its lifetime, the project is estimated to generate approximately $134 million in local economic benefits through property taxes, wages, and more.

It is also projected to generate more than $65 million in land lease payments to be allocated to the State of Arizona Land Trust. Box Canyon will also donate a portion of its proceeds to fund scholarships for 50 students to complete Central Arizona College’s electrican program over the next five years.

“The project is a perfect example of BrightNight’s 35-gigawatt portfolio across the United States, designed to meet urgent demand for reliable power in high-growth markets driven by industrialization, AI data centers, and electrification.  Built in just 15 months, the Box Canyon project demonstrates BrightNight’s ability to deliver best-in-class, utility-scale projects with quality and speed to market,” said BrightNight CEO, Martin Hermann, in a statement.
