NEMA Launches New Testing and Performance Standards for BESS

The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) has developed the BESS Testing and Performance Measurements Standard.

The standard will be used by data center developers, manufacturers, consumers and businesses, utilities, policymakers, researchers, and analysts.

According to T&D World, it was created to set performance expectations for battery energy storage systems (BESS). It has been designed to help end users make decisions about the deployment of BESS products for improved reliability and resilience, as well as economic development.

The standard highlights consistent methods for assessing key performance specifications of BESS for easier evaluation and selection of products. It will also help users to determine which correct storage system best meets their needs.

“An upcoming NEMA study projects that U.S. data center electricity demand will double, or potentially even triple, by 2030,” said Patrick Hughes, Senior Vice President, Technical Affairs, NEMA. “If the United States wants to lead the world in AI, we need tools like energy storage that will help create a reliable supply of electricity to power new data centers.”
