Target now hosts EV charging at more than 300 stores across 42 states, with approximately 3,000 charging stalls in operation, making it one of the largest retail charging footprints in the United States.
Going by total charging ports, Target’s network ranks between the fourth- and fifth-largest in the country, according to The EV Report.
The company reports its charging footprint has grown more than 200% since 2020, reflecting the rapid expansion of EV adoption across the country and growing demand for publicly accessible charging at retail locations. An additional 35 charging sites are currently under construction, with more than 100 locations in development across Target’s national footprint.
Target works with charging partners to determine which stores are a good fit for new installations, weighing local EV demand, market dynamics, and utility availability. The retailer frames the chargers as a convenience for shoppers, allowing drivers to run errands or browse the store while their vehicle charges.
Target’s charging program dates to 2017, when it opened its first fast-charging site at a store in San Mateo, California.
Most stations accept all EV models, and drivers can confirm compatibility for a specific station through third-party tools or Target’s online store locator, which filters locations by on-site charging availability.
As EV adoption continues to accelerate nationwide, Target’s continued investment in charging infrastructure reflects a broader trend of major retailers integrating EV charging into their customer experience, positioning charging access as both a sustainability initiative and a driver of foot traffic.
